ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- Growing healthy crops is a bit challenging lately for some Onslow County farmers.

  • Excessive rain has caused soybeans to drown
  • All of the rain is causing corn to grow at different heights
  • Soybeans are the fifth largest crop sold in the North Carolina

Excessive rain has caused soybeans to drown, forcing farmers to re-plant.

Many corn fields have also taken a hit. According to the Onslow County Extension Agent for Agriculture, all of the rain is causing corn to grow at different heights.

One farmer said his corn was completely washed out, which means more work to be done and money to be spent.

However, he still has hopes to produce good crops this season. "If we can get those half inch rains and one inch rains and then sunshine for a few days, it's fine,” said Stanley Craft, owner of Craft Farms.

“When it sets over and rains seven or eight inches in a couple hours , that's what causes problems."

In 2016, Onslow County farmers made $151.8 million.

Soybeans are the fifth largest crop sold in the North Carolina.
