EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -- Now that beach season is in full swing, lifeguards are reminding people about the dangers of rip currents.

  • 10 people rescued at Wrightsville Beach Wednesday, 16 during Memorial Day weekend
  • Don't panic if you find yourself in a rip current
  • Pay attention to warning flag systems on the beach and swim near a lifeguard

On Wednesday, 10 people were rescued at Wrightsville Beach.

During Memorial Day weekend, lifeguards had to rescue 16 people in Emerald Isle.

The Emerald Isle Lifeguard Supervisor says the beginning of the season is generally more active because it's hurricane season.

People are urged to always swim near a lifeguard and ask questions about the water conditions before getting in.

If you do find yourself in a rip current, don't panic.

"Biggest thing is stay calm,” said Rachael Javurek, Emerald Isle Lifeguard Supervisor. “Rip currents, they take you out, they do not pull you under, so do not fight it, go out with it, take it out, swim parallel to shore, come back in on that sand bar, the waves will bring you back in,” she added.

Lifeguards also say people should pay close attention to the warning flag system.

If flags are on red, do not get in the water.
