SWAN QUARTER, N.C. -- Authorities say an inmate at a Hyde County prison has been stabbed with a homemade weapon.

  • Inmate stabbed at Hyde Correctional Institution.
  • The inmate was assaulted by other inmates.
  • Suffered non-life-threatening injuries. 

The N.C. Department of Public Safety said in a news release the incident occurred Wednesday morning at Hyde Correctional Institution in Fairfield.

A department news release said the inmate was assaulted by other inmates while on the recreation yard.

The wounded inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

An internal investigation is underway and the Hyde County Sheriff's Office has been contacted to look into the incident.

No suspects have been identified so far.
