CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Potential tariffs on vehicle imports could impact consumers and thousands of workers in North Carolina.

  • There is a possibility of a 25 percent tariff on imporrted vehicles
  • Industry experts say that additional cost could be pushed on customers
  • There are nearly 300 auto manufacturing facilities in the state

The Department of Commerce is reportedly considering as much as a 25 percent tariff on imported vehicles and parts.

Along with dealerships, there's 290 auto manufacturing facilities in North Carolina according to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. Many of those are manufacturing parts for foreign cars.

"For every $100 of stuff you sell, you're making about 2 bucks," Jim Keffer with Keffer Auto Group said. "When you talk about a tariff that could increase the price of something that could go up 10, to 20 or 25 percent that has to be passed directly to the consumers."

34 of the top 150 auto parts manufacturers in the U.S. have significant operations in North Carolina according to EDPNC.
