A front near the South Carolina border Thursday will keep scattered showers and storms across portions of southeastern North Carolina. Some of those showers and storms will produce heavy downpours at times.

In eastern North Carolina, the chance for rain will be highest south of Jacksonville from near Wilmington to the South Carolina border.

The rest of eastern North Carolina will see a mix of clouds and sun through most of Thursday. Northeastern North Carolina the Outer Banks will see mostly sunny conditions. Afternoon highs will range from the low 80s at our beaches to the mid 80s inland.

There is very little chance for rain coming up for Friday. The last day of the week will be partly cloudy with highs again in the 80s.

The chance for rain will increase through the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. It now appears likely that a tropical system will develop in the Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. That will spread tropical moisture across the southeastern United States through the weekend.

For North Carolina, the holiday weekend may not be a complete washout. Saturday morning should be dry with just isolated storms expected Saturday afternoon. The showers and storms will become more widespread across the state for Sunday and certainly for Memorial Day when heavy downpours will be possible.
