BESSEMER CITY, N.C. -- Grieving family members extended their condolences to the entire Gaston County community after a deadly incident Sunday.

“We realize that the last 48 hours plus have been difficult and challenging for many more than just our family,” Monty Self said.

The Gaston County sheriff says last Sunday, Roger Self seated his family at a table inside Surf and Turf Lodge. He excused himself, then slammed his Jeep into the restaurant right where his family was sitting.

“At this time, we still have family members battling the physical ramifications of this event,” Monty Self said.

Self's 13-year-old granddaughter along with his wife, Diane, and his son, Josh, who is a Gaston County police officer were all badly hurt. Self's 26-year-old daughter Katelyn, a Gaston County sheriff's deputy, and his daughter-in-law, Amanda, were both killed.

Though family members blame Self's severe mental illness for what police say was an “intentional act,” the impact of these horrific images has been far reaching.

“We don't try to say well here's the context, or here's why it happened. We don't try to explain the reason. We don't know the reason,” a family member said.

It's why the Self family's church, Venture, where Roger Self was at one point a youth pastor, held this time of healing for middle and high school students. That healing carried on Wednesday night to this candlelight vigil outside the lodge.
