ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- Someone has stolen a trailer full of tools at the Crystal Coast Habitat for Humanity’s 97th home build project in Maysville.

  • Discovery made Tuesday morning
  • Thief cut locks and cables
  • Stole trailer with hammers, ladders, saws and other supplies

Volunteers made the discovery Tuesday morning.

They last saw the 12-foot long white trailer at the Smith Road Construction site on Monday night.

Site supervisor Raymond Tyrrell says the thief cut the locks and cables.

It was filled with hammers, ladders, saws and other building supplies. But Tyrrell says this incident isn't stopping them from helping a family in need.

"Some of the guys who live not too far away, they went home, got some tools, got some ladders, and we're doing as much as we can,” said Tyrrell. “We'll get by, and we'll pull some materials and tools from the Morehead area, it'll be an inconvenience but we'll keep going and moving on the house," he added.

The future homeowner, Joy Mattocks, who is a mother of two, says she is excited to see the progress on her dream home but is in disbelief about the theft.

"You should work for what you want and not take what's not yours," said Mattocks. "Then, to take from an organization like this, that's doing good deeds, that's helping families like mine and other families and not only do you give me a setback, you give a setback to the next family in line because now they got to replenish all that stuff," said Mattocks.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call to Crime Stoppers at 910-938-3273.
