WILMINGTON, N.C. -- An $83 million project in downtown Wilmington is causing headaches for local business owners.

Last fall, workers knocked down a parking deck to start work on the project known as the River Place.

Some small businesses in the area are struggling to keep their doors open amid the construction.

One candle shop owner says he had to close his doors for a couple of days because of the ongoing work, and says foot traffic continues to decrease.

"We closed down Sunday and Monday, but of course with all this construction. People are not coming down this far," says White Lake Wick manager Wayne Reynolds

The project, when it's done, will be a 13-story structure that will include more than 100 condos, retail space, and more than 400 parking spots.

City officials say some of the street will be opening soon, giving customers access to the small shops nearby.

Officials mention the project should be completed by 2020.
