ANSON COUNTY, N.C. -- An inmate at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution claims she isn't being allowed to practice witchcraft just days before Beltane, a high-holy day in the Wiccan faith that celebrates the arrival of spring.

According to a handwritten lawsuit, Jennifer Jasmaine, who is transgender, says she's only allowed to practice Wicca eight times a year.

“It’s about making sure that an inmate feels they are allowed to have time to practice and observe their faith and know they are not being punished or ostracized for wanting that time," said Lady Alba Grabrielle from the Life Temple and Seminary.

The lawsuit claims the prison denied her access to the vegan diet required by her religion.

She is serving a nine-year sentence for second-degree sexual offense.

The prison has not responded to our request for comment on the suit.
