WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Animal cruelty charges against a Wilmington woman were dismissed by the District Attorney's office.

  • 150 ducks living in filthy conditions
  • Sheriff's office plans to refile charges in the next five days
  • Ducks will likely end up in the custody of the state

Cynthia Huber was charged late last year after authorities found more than 150 ducks living in filthy conditions on her property.

The ducks were seized and have been undergoing treatment at the SkyWatch Bird Rescue Center.

The sheriff's office says the charges were dropped due to some issues, but they plan to refile charges in the next five days against Huber including cruelty to animals and misuse of 911.

"The animals can't speak or talk for themselves so it's our job to protect them. And that is one thing that Sheriff McMahon has made a point with the animal services unit that we are going to charge people with cruelty if they are being mean to animals," said Lt. Jerry Brewer.

Right now, it's unclear where the ducks will end up but the sheriff's office said they will likely end up in the custody of the state.
