BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- A Brunswick County man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities say he threw a dog off of a bridge.

• Sheriff's office said he threw the dog off the bridge
• The dog is expected to be OK

Benjamin Melzer, 19, was arrested Tuesday.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says Melzer maliciously tortured a female terrier when he threw her off a bridge into a creek.

The dog survived and is expected to be OK. 

Melzer is being held on a $5,000 bond.
