ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. -- Single Marines from Camp Lejeune spent all week giving back to the community.

  • Volunteers say it's all about building bonds
  • Event for Single Marine Program Days of Service
  • Also volunteered at other centers

It's a part of the Single Marine Program Days of Service.

Friday, nearly 300 troops cleaned up Lejeune Memorial Gardens and Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Throughout the week, they also volunteered at the local USO, aquariums, animal shelters and child development centers.

They say it's all about building a bond with the community.

"It allows us to understand and give back so they understand we're here for them, we care about them and we're here to stay," said Lance Corporal Shemar Chambers.

Since Monday, about 1,000 troops from Camp Lejeune volunteered.

Each Marine will be given a letter of appreciation which can help towards promotion and Marine Corps Volunteer Awards.
