MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – A tuna caught off Oregon Inlet is breaking records, but luckily, not a fisherman’s reel.

North Carolina Environmental Quality announced Monday that Retired Army General Scott Chambers reeled in an 877-pound fish after fighting with it for more than two hours. It measured 113 inches from nose to tail and had a girth of 79 inches.

On March 17, the fish was caught using a trolling dead bait on a 130 pound line test on a 130 Shimano rod reel the release says. He was aboard charter boat A-Salt Weapon fishing out of Pirates Cove Marina in Manteo, officials say.

Coming from Delaware, Chambers broke the former North Carolina record for a Bluefin tuna by 72 pounds. That fish was also caught off Oregon Inlet back in 2011.

The world all-tackle record for a Bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1979 and weighed 1,496 pounds.
