More than 1.4 million veterans in the United States are living in poverty according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. But the Veterans Experience Benefits Center and Stand-Down event in Wilmington is working to change that.

Thursday, vets spoke with experts about their claims and various benefits. One woman we spoke with said last year she received more than $40,000 after the center increased her disability to 100%.

Event organizers said they are also providing care bags for homeless vets and extra assistance.

"Our suicide rate for veterans is about 22 a day. Very high, it's something that we really want to address and if we can help them with an event like this then it'll benefit everybody,” said Tom Cerniglia.

The event continues through Saturday at 2PM at the Elks Club in Wilmington.
