CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- Much of Carolina Beach’s Freeman Park may soon become part of the town.

Right now, most of the non-public land is owned by private corporations and the county.

The town council is looking to change that, with hopes of buying more than 300 acres adjacent to the camping beach.

Town Manager Michael Cramer says this all comes after private property owners set up fencing and sea oats on the public access less than a month ago, causing a temporary closure of the park for drivers.

“In order to alleviate any future issues like that and also to create a better park experience, our council has been interested in looking to purchase the rest of the properties out there either voluntarily or involuntarily through eminent domain,” says Cramer.

We reached out to an attorney who represents the Freeman park property owners and they declined to comment at this time.
