WILMINGTON -- More than 35,000 people in New Hanover County aren’t sure where they’ll get their next meal according to the Good Shepherd Center. That’s why Friday folks from around the Port City came together to help fight hunger at First Baptist Church.

It’s the ninth year for the empty bowls event that raises money for both the Good Shepherd Center and Mother Hubbards Cupboard. For just $20 guests get a hand crafted bowl and a cup of their favorite soup that’s been donated from local restaurants.

"Hunger can be kind of a heavy topic. But this isn't a heavy event. It feels light-hearted and fun. And it really brings just a diverse crowd together out of concern for their neighbors and in support of Mother Hubbard's Cupboard and Good Shepherd,” said Katrina Knight.

With more than 1,500 people in attendance, the event was a sellout.
