NORTH CAROLINA -- Car insurance rates are on the rise nationwide, but North Carolina is challenging that trend.

According to The Zebra, North Carolina's average annual car insurance premium is $865. Charlotte metro-area residents pay more at $930, but that's still much less compared to the country's average of $1,427.

The most expensive state's insurance rate is Michigan at a whopping $2,610.

The site says rates vary widely across the country due to factors including state and local laws, urbanization and population changes, uninsured drivers, fraud and crime rates, and weather.

And if you're looking to purchase a new car, The Zebra says the least expensive car to insure is the Honda CR-V.
