DEEP RUN, N.C. -- A 16-year-old South Lenoir High School student is dead after a shooting in Duplin County.

Now investigators are trying to determine how it happened.

Authorities say Monday night, deputies responded to a call in Deep Run on Bryce Hardison Road.

Officials found Jessica Ramsey was shot in the head.

She was taken to Vidant Medical Center where she died Wednesday.

The Duplin County Sheriff's Office has not said anything about the circumstances of the shooting or if they are looking for a suspect.

The school's principal released a statement saying: "She touched the lives of our staff and many of our students at South Lenoir during her three short years with us. Our hearts are heavy and our deepest condolences go out to the family."

Grief counselors are on hand at the school to help students and staff cope with her loss.

A candlelight vigil is planned for her on Friday at South Lenoir High School starting at 6:30 p.m.

A visitation will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jackson Heights Freewill Baptist Church.
