RALEIGH -- Hundreds of charter school, magnet school and home school fans rallied inside the State Museum of History in Raleigh Tuesday afternoon.

The rally was part of National School Choice Week, which is meant to highlight alternative types of education. While the week covers magnet schools and home schools, charter school students and teachers were the overwhelming majority at Raleigh's rally.

"When people say your school isn't good enough, magnets are a drain on the public schools, charters don't have to take all students, or neighborhood schools don't provide a quality education don't listen to them," said Deborah Brown, a teacher at Research Triangle High School, a charter school within the Research Triangle Park. "Be a different voice."

State superintendent Mark Johnson also made an appearance at the event. He said some of the ideas developed by the school choice community could play a big role in the future of North Carolina's education.

"We personalize everything in society today...we personalize our news and our social media," said Johnson. "We need to use the same technology to personalize our education in the appropriate ways, and we're really going to talk a lot about that in the next year in bringing that to schools."

This event was one of many taking place in the U.S. this week for National School Choice Week.
