RALEIGH -- The national weather service says nearly half a foot of snow fell in Raleigh on Wednesday.

The 5.9 inches of snow they recorded is the most Raleigh has seen on one January day since 6.5 fell on January 3, 2002.

The city's all-time record for January came back in the year 2000, when a whopping 17.9 inches fell on January 25.

Many schools and businesses in the area remain closed due to the conditions.
