CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. -- Construction equipment will soon be gone from Carolina Beach’s lake.

Tuesday night, town council voted to terminate the contract for their current dredging project. Work was suspended four months ago after the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point told the town to stop discharging the spoils onto their property.

So far, $1.1 million has already been spent, with work only 40 percent completed. The town manager said while the town looks for another site, it’s best not to leave the construction equipment sitting idle by the lake.

“Having an open construction site that sits for multiple months is neither desirable nor safe. So, we want to conclude the contract so that we clean that up,” said Michael Cramer, Town Manager.

Town officials said they hope to begin a new lake dredging project next year.
