NEW BERN -- New Bern Historical Society is trying something new this year by adding a gingerbread contest to the Beary Merry Christmas festivities.

Sprinkled throughout downtown you’ll see 31 colorful houses in 14 storefronts.

"It definitely gets people looking in windows and checking them out and it's good to have the community to participate in something that bring them together for Christmas," said Brooke Mayo, a Currituck County resident.

You'll find historic reproductions, Hansel and Gretel cottages and even log cabins.

All contest entries have already been judged and participants have a chance at cash prizes.

They compete in three categories:  youth, adult and professional. The only rule is they all have to be edible.

Winners will be announced on Saturday during the New Bern tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m.

All gingerbread houses will be on display until January 2.
