NORTH CAROLINA -- For one day only, veterans and their spouses can erase potential negative rulings for misdemeanor court cases.

Operation Clean Slate is a type of veterans’ appreciation program that clears away pending, non-violent offenses for those living in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus and New Hanover counties.

Those who attended just needed to bring their papers and military information and public offenders looked over their cases.

Officials hosting the events want to reduce the barriers to employment, housing and other opportunities that these charges might cause.

Some veterans who attended the event say ticket cost can add up, but this is a pleasant burden lifted off their shoulders.

“Being a veteran your proud to serve your country because they will look out for you. If you look out for your country, they will look out for you. So glad for that,” says veteran Steven Paige.

This is the only DA office in the state offering Operation Clean Slate

In some cases, the judge even waived fines related to the charges.
