CORNELIUS – Several good Samaritans were awarded after helping a player who fell unconscious at a soccer game.

The Cornelius Police department recognized civilians Holly Holsclaw, Kevin Averette, Truett Smith and Craig Conger after they helped save James Dunworth III life at Bailey Road Park on March 12.

Officials say officer Bryan McGahan’s arrived and immediately used a defibrillator to help resuscitating Dunworth as paramedics came and transported him to a nearby hospital and was later released.

In a release the department says, “The actions of Ms. Holsclaw, Mr. Averette, Mr. Smith, Mister Conger and Officer McGahan directly resulted in Mr. Dunworth’s survival of a heart attack.”  

The individuals were honored on October 13 with a Civilian Commendation for their actions in helping Dunworth until first responders arrived.

Officer McGahan was awarded the Life Saving Award for his efforts and quick response.  He was also recognized by the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce.
