After days of near-record highs last week, central North Carolina will finally get a break from the summer-like heat.

A fast-moving cold front passing through early Monday morning will bring a quick round of showers across the central part of the state through early Monday afternoon before exiting to the east, where some areas could locally pick up near one inch of rainfall. Winds will also become gusty at times after its passage before dying down Monday night.

After the front moves through, dry high pressure along with cooler temperatures will file in behind it. Tuesday morning will be off to a crisp, autumn-like start, with lows bottoming out in the 40s for areas across the Piedmont and Triad and 30s for the higher terrain, where patchy frost will be possible. Highs on Tuesday should be about five degrees below average, with most locations across the Piedmont and Triad only expected to reach into the 60s under plenty of sun.

A warming trend will commence by the middle of the work week and continue through the weekend with highs warming back into the upper 70s and low 80s.
