JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- Nearly 2,000 residents lined up at the Jacksonville Commons Recreation Center in Jacksonville on Saturday to get free over-the-counter medications.

Old North State Medical Foundation partnered with NC MedAssist to provide the medications to residents who are unable to afford them.

One volunteer says it will help families save money especially during the holidays.

“Some people in our area do not have healthcare,” said Gloria Goodwin, a volunteer with Old North State Medical Foundation. “It's an awesome way to cut down on the costs for families who are financially disabled because of whatever reason, health, lack of insurance, and this provides some financial relief for them.”

Residents were able to choose from a variety of items including digestive aids, skin treatments, and cough medicine.

Organizers hope to bring the event back to the area next year.
