PENDER COUNTY, N.C. -- Baker, queen of sweet treats, and owner of the Sugar Island Bakery, Sam Smith, certainly knows her way around the kitchen.

"I have been baking since I was tiny and it was something I've always enjoyed doing and I get a lot of joy out of watching people eat things," said Smith.

Smith opened her bakery in Surf City about three years ago and it has been slammed ever since.

Her sweet treats have been featured in several magazines and in Martha Stewart's "American Made" contest. Not only are the baked goods delicious, but they are also made with locally grown produce.

"I use local honey and all my fruits local. Our pecans come from an old fellow outside of Benson. And our eggs come from a local farm and our grains come outside of Goldsboro. So ya we really try to get to know our farmers and get to go to their farms a lot. So we're always on field trips which is awesome,” said Smith.

With a variety of yummy deserts and  it's authentic atmosphere, the bakery has tons of loyal customers like Peggy Dysart.

"It is such a homey feeling. You can come in and read books and have a cup of coffee. Besides that, their pastries are to die for. I have never had anything in here that wasn't spectacular,” said Dysart.

Each morning Smith makes about 1,000 items from scratch and with all natural ingredients.

"And that's what's really important to us is people being able to taste something and it -- there's no preservatives, there's no junk, nothing's frozen, it's just all that fresh. So if you're enjoying it, it's a real treat," said Smith.

Fresh, local and of course very tasty. The Sugar Island Bakery is the perfect spot to satisfy your sweet tooth.

The Sugar Island Bakery is open Thursday and Sunday from from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
