As Halloween inches closer and closer, staying safe during the fun holiday is just as important as your costume.

As you go around collecting treats from homes on the streets, remember these tips from the Red Cross.

COSTUME SAFETY:

  • Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags
  • Have everyone wear light-colored clothing to be seen
  • Use flame-resistant costumes
  • Use face makeup instead of masks, which can cover your eyes and make it hard to see

TRICK-OR-TREATING SAFETY

  • Make sure trick-or-treaters have a flashlight to see where they are going and to be seen by drivers.
  • Visit only the homes that have a porch light on it. Accept treats at the door. Do not go inside.
  • Walk only on the sidewalks, not the streets. If there is no sidewalk available, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street, and only at the corner.
  • Don’t cut across yards or use alleys. Don’t cross between parked cars.
  • Be cautious of all animals.
  • Adults: check the treats before children eat them. Toss away loose candy, open packages and choking hazards.
