WILMINGTON -- In various locations around downtown Wilmington, people will find an array of contemporary sculptures.

The 12 new sculptures are part of the Pedestrian Art Program, sponsored by The Arts Council of Wilmington & New Hanover County, in collaboration with Tri-State Sculptures.

The Arts Council of Wilmington & NHC, Executive Director, Rhonda Bellamy said, "These are sculptures works that come from across the state. And so we wanted to be sure we had different styles, different materials that the sculptures were made out of."

The program is a way to start conversation and introduce spectators to the diversity of contemporary public art and artists. Spectator, Logan Thorpe said, "I think what's really neat is you just kind of make up your own interpretation for each different piece. There's no one set thing, which I think is pretty cool."

"I want them to have a reaction to it, good or bad. But this is sculpture -- public art that we've placed in the public sphere and that is the purpose of it-- to allow people to react to it," said Bellamy.

The Arts Council of Wilmington will launch it's Arts on Tour mobile app on April 24, which will allow folks to take self guided tours of the sculptures.

An opening reception and trolley tours will also take place on April 24, which is International Sculpture Day. The sculptures will remain on display for a year.
