The way of getting around the city is about to change, as the MTA board prepares to vote on a new fare payment system.

New Yorkers have been swiping and dipping their way onto subways and buses for more than 20 years.

But the MTA has plans to begin phasing out the MetroCard and replacing it with a new fare payment system that the transit agency's board is set to vote on next week.

According to MTA documents, the agency is looking to California-based company Cubic to develop a way that will allow New Yorkers to pay by smart phones, contactless cards, or MTA-issued transit cards.

The system would be usable on buses and subways and on the MTA's two commuter railroads. Cubic has developed similar payment methods for transit systems in London, Vancouver, and Chicago.
