CHARLOTTE -- The Seahawks got a 31-yard field goal from kicker Sebastian Janikowski as time expired to beat the Panthers Sunday 30-27, as Carolina suffered its third-straight defeat.

The game winning kick came after Panthers kicker Graham Gano missed a 52-yard field goal attempt which would have given Carolina the lead with 1:40 left in the game.

"You know, I hit 42 in a row at home (entering Sunday) and then miss  a 52‐yarder like that, it’s really really frustrating," said Gano who was 2 of 3 on field goal attempts Sunday and a perfect 3 for 3 on extra points.

"I’ve got the leg to make those kicks, that’s what’s really… a tough one to swallow.," Gano continued. "They’ve got the faith in me to kick them from far, so I’ve got to go out there and make  them. I’ve hit a bunch of those this year from 50‐plus and this one just didn’t go in. "

On a day in which running back Christian McCaffrey set the franchise record with 237 yards from scrimmage and quarterback Cam Newton began the day 13 of 13 passing and finished 25 of 30 for 256 yards and two touchdowns, missed opportunities cost the Panthers.

Twice Carolina came away with zero points inside the red zone. First on a 4th and 2 run by Newton on their first drive of the game that was ruled short of the first down marker.

"I thought he picked it up," said Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera.  "I was as bewildered as anyone watching that play."

Newton would throw an interception on the Panthers opening drive of the third quarter.

"A good play by the defensive back and the interception," said Newton. "This is an aggressive, talented defense and we know when the opportunity is there you have to cash in on it."

The loss leaves the Panthers at 6-5, four games back of New Orleans in the NFC South Division but still in the hunt for a Wild Card playoff spot with five games to play.

"You know we'll hear a lot of negativity from everybody else but in this locker room we're going to stay positive and try to win the next game," said McCaffrey.

"We’ve just got to look ourselves in the mirror, understand what we aren’t, and fix it," added Newton. "At the end of the day, there’s no need to panic, but we need to seize the moment better than we are."

Carolina faces 4-7 Tampa Bay on the road next Sunday.
