RALEIGH, N.C. – Josh Bailey’s power play goal 43 seconds into overtime lifted the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on opening night Thursday.

The game was scoreless over the first 31:33, but the deadlock was broken when the Islanders Valtteri Filppula beat Carolina goaltender Petr Mrazek between the legs to open the scoring.

It remained 1-0 until late in the third period.  Carolina pulled Mrazek in favor of an extra attacker with three minutes to play.  The extra man paid off when Dougie Hamilton’s shot deflected off the left hip of Jordan Staal, and got behind Thomas Greiss with 1:35 left in regulation to tie the game at one.

Carolina’s Micheal Ferland was whistled for a tripping minor with four seconds left in regulation, and the penalty carried over into the overtime period.  The Islanders won the game on Bailey’s marker with the teams skating four-on-three to start the five minute overtime.

The Hurricanes outshot New York 46-20 for the contest.

Carolina is back in action Friday night when they travel to face the Columbus Blue Jackets at 7 p.m.
