CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Appalachian State quarterback Zac Thomas threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns in the Mountaineers 45-9 win over Charlotte Saturday night.

  • Thomas completed 14 of 14 passes as the 49ers held ASU running back Jalen Moore to just 38 yards on 11 carries
  • A Jerry Richardson Stadium record crowd of 151 watched the 49ers and Mountaineers meet
  • Both teams are now 1-1 on the season

Thomas completed 14 of 14 passes as the 49ers held ASU running back Jalen Moore to just 38 yards on 11 carries.

A Jerry Richardson Stadium record crowd of 19,151 watched the 49ers and Mountaineers meet for the first time on the football field.

Determined not to let Moore beat them, the 49ers stacked the box defensively and trailed just 10-3 when Thomas connected from 27 yards out with Corey Sutton for a touchdown in the second quarter to take a 17-3 advantage.

Charlotte answered with a drive to the ASU 35 yard line. However, they could get no closer and settled for a 54-yard field goal from Jonathan Cruz to cut the lead to 17-6. Cruz accounted for all nine of the team's points.

Appalachian State led 24-9 at half and it stayed that way until a Thomas Hennigan 59-yard punt return for a touchdown with 6:01 left in the third quarter for a 31-9 lead. Thomas then connected with Sutton again for a 90-yard score early in the fourth quarter to make it 38-9 ASU. A Charlotte fumble in their own end-zone recovered by the Mountaineers closed out the scoring at 45-9.

Both teams are now 1-1 on the season. Appalachian State hosts Southern Mississippi next Saturday afternoon at 3:30, while Charlotte welcomes Old Dominion at 6:00.
