CONCORD, N.C. - Leavine Family Racing announced Thursday that Kasey Kahne will not drive this weekend in Indianapolis after suffering extreme heat exhaustion Sunday night during the Southern 500 in Darlington.

  • Doctors recommended that he miss the race
  • Kahne announced earlier he would be stepping away from full-time NASCAR competition at the end of the season
Regan Smith will replace Kahne for the final regular season race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season.

From the team’s news release: “Following Sunday night’s race at Darlington, Kahne was taken to the track’s care center where he was treated for heat exhaustion.  Several days later, Kahne opted to consult with several physicians who recommended that he sit out from this weekend’s events at Indianapolis until further testing and evaluations are completed.”

No timetable has been set for Kahne’s return. The race team is expected to provide an update for their plans in Las Vegas next week.

Earlier this summer, Kahne announced he would be stepping away from full-time NASCAR competition at the end of the season.
