CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Running back Benny LeMay rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns to power the Charlotte 49ers to a season-opening victory Saturday over Fordham 34-10.

The game endured several lightning delays, including one that pushed back the scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff over an hour.

In his first collegiate start, redshirt freshman quarterback Chris Reynolds threw for 267 yards and a touchdown.

"The first drive I was little nervous, but I think there's something wrong if you're not nervous," said Reynolds. "I'm happy the way everyone around me executed. It helped me out a lot. Benny made some huge plays."

LeMay's big game means he became the third player in school history to run for a thousand yards in his career (1,042).

"I mean it's a good stat to have but I'd definitely take a win any day," said LeMay after the game. "However many yards they (the team) need me to get, that's definitely what I want to achieve."

The win makes Charlotte 1-0 on the young season. They will host Appalachian State next Saturday at 6 p.m. The Mountaineers lost a heartbreaker in overtime at tenth ranked Penn State on Saturday.
