Hurricane Helene is expecting to pack a punch when the storm hits the state Friday. As a result, schools have either opted to keep students at home and working remotely Friday, or close school entirely.

Those closures include the major districts of Durham County Public Schools and Orange County Schools.

Government Closings

  • Blue Ridge Parkway closures: Doughton Park Campground and Picnic Area, Doughton Park Visitor Center, Moses Cone Manor House, the Minerals Museum, and the Asheville Visitor Center
  • Mecklenberg County Parks: - Kirk Farm Fields, McAlpine Park, Freedom Park, Revolution Park
  • Catawba County Parks closed Friday
  • City of Lenoir facilities closed Friday

Shelters

  • Henderson County:708 South Grove Street. The shelter will open at 12:00pm on Thursday, September 26 and will remain open until it is safe for residents to return home
  • Haywood County: 235 Armory Drive. Residents seeking shelter are welcome to arrive any time after 3 p.m. Thursday
  • Buncombe County: 503 Park St., Swannanoa, NC 28778. The County is working on opening shelters in the region
