The United States Golf Association is very busy right now in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The USGA has lots of workers setting up grandstands and buildings that will bring fans close to all the action when the U.S. Open comes June 13 to 16 at the No. 2 golf course there.

Tournament Operations Manager Jim Cirurso is watching over all the activity. 

“It’s the Mecca,” he said of the famous course. “Pinehurst itself has 10 golf courses that are top notch. People come from all over the world, and we’re excited to bring the U.S. Open to Pinehurst Number Two.”

A new grandstand at the 18th hole is one of the exciting features. It will have seating for more than 2,000 fans. Cirurso expects about 30,000 people to attend the tournament every day.

Many people enjoy visiting the Champion Pavilion locations, the satellite merchandise store and the Trophy Club. All of that will be close by the course, between the 14th and 18th holes.

“If you know Tiger Woods is on 13 green, you can hop out and go see him and follow him for a couple of holes … and then come right back in and try and get that sports bar atmosphere inside,” Cirurso said.

And there will be plenty of corporate hospitality boxes and suites like the one being built beside the 17th hole.

The USGA is also establishing a permanent presence in Pinehurst. There’s a headquarters building there now, and the World Golf Hall of Fame will be located there. About 60 people will be working at the site, according to USGA.
