"Families in Mecklenburg County and employees as a whole are hopeful that this will be resolved. Many of them are children, and many of them support working families,” Mecklenburg County social services deputy director MenTchaas Ari says.

He says social services clients rely on Food Nutrition Program benefits because it provides low-income families with funds to purchase food needed for an adequate diet. They received those benefits early on January 20 to try to stop any disruptions.

Both January and February benefits will arrive this month.

Ari says that means it's important to budget  to make sure food supplies last.

“Folks are always encouraged to look for food that is on sale or discounted,” he says. “They also can use coupons with this.”

He says the office is still taking new applications for benefits with the hope that the safety net will make it to March.
