GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Saturday will be a cloudy and chilly, but a dry day giving you time to prepare for winter's arrival.

  • A warning is in effect for all of the Triad and other areas
  • Cold and cloudy start on Saturday
  • Wet weather begins late Saturday night and into early Sunday morning

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for all of the Triad and extends towards Boone, down to Charlotte and to Asheville.

Thickening clouds overnight will make for a cold and cloudy start on Saturday. No wet weather expected during the day on Saturday, but precipitation starts to move in late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

From just after midnight Saturday night, we will see the snow increase across the region from south to north. By daybreak Sunday, snow will be coming down pretty hard. As we get into the afternoon, we will see that snow mix with sleet mostly around the Triad and points north and east. That will continue through Sunday night into Monday morning. By Monday afternoon we should see that wintry mix change over to snow as it ends.

Areas west of the Triad will see mostly snow with only brief periods of sleet and possibly freezing rain. If that isn’t enough for you, winds will be gusting from 25 to 30 mph beginning around sunrise Sunday and continuing into Sunday night.

Where the heavy snow falls and where we will see a wintry mix will depend greatly on the track of the storm, a slight change in the storm’s path will greatly impact the forecast.

The bottom line is that this is looking to be a major winter storm for the region and preparations need to be made now as travel will be difficult to impossible by Sunday afternoon into Monday.
