CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. – One person is dead after a fire broke out at 311 Prince Street in Kannapolis Wednesday morning.

Authorities say Patricia Hyatt, 69, who lived at the house, did not make it out.

Additionally, officials say three firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

"The loss of a family member, especially at the holiday times of the year, is devastating," Steve Kluttz, a family friend said.

It is unclear what started the fire, but a neighbor reported hearing an explosion shortly before emergency crews were seen rushing to the home.

Authorities say while the cause has not been determined, it does appear to be accidental.

Eight others in the home at the time of the fire were able to escape, however. They are being assisted by the Red Cross.
