MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Mooresville police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.

  • Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting.
  • The suspect is in custody.
  • No one was injured.

It started at around 11 p.m. last night when police were called to investigate a suspicious car, believed to be a U-Haul van, on Shearers Road near Fire Station 3.

According to Mooresville police, when the officer arrived, they found two vehicles with people inside them.

The officer approached one of the cars, but the occupants, one of them 27-year-old Jeffrey Stewart, refused to comply with the officer's requests.

The two exchanged gunfire, but at this point it's not clear who fired first.

Chief Damon Williams said the officers are trained for this type of situation.

“It’s not the normal type of situation we have here in town, you know the job that we do every day the officers are involved in across the state of North Carolina is a very dangerous job, and I think this is just a reminder that when the officers put the badge on they are responding and dealing with situations that can sometimes escalate very quickly,” said Damon Williams, Mooresville's police chief.

No one was injured. Stewart is in custody and has been charged with Resist, Delay, and Obstruct an Officer, Reckless Driving to Endanger, and Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill.
