WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Fire officials in Cary say the fire at a mosque being built in West Chatham Street was accidental.

  • A fire was reported at a mosque being built in Cary Friday morning.
  • The leader of the mosque said it seemed suspicious to them
  • Officials say there is no evidence of it being intentionally set

Friday night, officials say there is no evidence of the fire being intentionally set.

The fire started shortly before 8 a.m. Friday morning. Crews were able to get it out quickly, without any visible damage to structure from outside. No injuries were reported.

“We’re kind of peeling back layers to make sure we give a good cause and origin report on this. I’m not prepared to say suspicious or not suspicious,” Cary Fire Department Battalion Chief Matt Jacoby said.

Earlier, the leader of the mosque said he believed the fire was suspicious. He said there is no electricity running to the building yet, and a window was found broken next to where the fire started.

“Well we were concerned about it. We have been concerned about it since the Pittsburgh synagogue incident because there are a lot of copycat people to do that. So, we were concerned. We had police surveillance, police department working with us," Shakil Ahmed said.
