NORTH CAROLINA -- While GenX is present in the water of New Hanover County, researchers say they aren't able to detect it in the blood of 300 residents.

  • Four different types of man-made chemicals found.
  • 300 people who get their water from the Cape Fear Utility Authority volunteered for the study
  • The chemicals that were found in the blood tests could potentially have health effects

However, researchers did find something else in their blood tests: four different types of man-made chemicals. PFAs are compounds similar to GenX, usually found in things like nonstick pans.

Late last year, more than 300 people who get their water from the Cape Fear Utility Authority volunteered for the study.

Researchers tested the tap water first before moving on to blood work.

According to the same researchers, the chemicals that were found in the blood tests could potentially have health effects. Next, they will test urine samples. Results from those will come in in the spring.

The volunteers in the study will be getting their blood result back in the mail this week.
