MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- There were some big upsets in the Mecklenburg County commissioners race Tuesday night. 

  • Democratic incumbents Pat Cotham, Trevor Fuller, and Ella Scarborough all retain their at-large seats.
  • Democartic challengers Elaine Powell and Susan McDowell defeated Republican incumbents Jim Puckett and Bill James.
  • District 5 is too close to call, but Democratic challenger Susan Harden leads Republican incumbent Matthew Ridenhour

In the at-large race, as expected, Democratic incumbents Pat Cotham, Trevor Fuller, and Ella Scarborough all held onto their seats.

However, in three seats held by Republican incumbents, two of them have been flipped to Democratic challengers. The third is still too early to call, but the Democratic challenger is in the lead. 

In District 1, Incumbent Republican Jim Puckett lost to Democrat Elaine Powell.

In District 6, longtime Republican incumbent Bill James lost to Susan McDowell. 

The District 5 race is too close to call. Republican incumbent Matthew Ridenhour has 49 percent of the vote, while Susan Harden has nearly 51 percent.
