CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Wedgewood Church's congregation and community members met Sunday for a blessing of unity and protection.

  • The church was tagged almost two weeks ago
  • Investigators are reviewing the church's cameras
  • Officers also attend service for safety

The gathering happened almost two weeks after hateful graffiti appeared on its building yet again.

A bit of peace and spiritual protection was offered as friends of the church united and embraced in a circle outside the sanctuary.

"Good for us to have an opportunity to say something - whether we say it with our mouths, with our hearts, or just by showing up," said Patrice Gaines.

Church leaders explained they had just finished rehabbing the colorful entrance from the last incident, which took place earlier this year.

"In some ways we take it as a backwards compliment in the sense that we must be doing something important that people are acting out in this way," said Pastor Malu Fairley-Collins. "We are grateful that it's only words."

Police are still reviewing the church's cameras which were donated after the last attack. Officers also continue to attend services for safety.
