CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some murder cases in Charlotte will go years, even decades without being solved. A special unit at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is making sure those cases are closed.

  • The cold case homicide unit was created in 2003 and has cleared 48 cases
  • The team of 14 is made up of detectives, retired FBI agents, and volunteers
  • If you know anything about an open case, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600

The cold case homicide unit was created in 2003 and has cleared 48 cases, some dating back to the 1970s.

The team of 14 is made up of detectives, retired FBI agents, and volunteers.

Sgt. Darrell Price leads the unit, and says the advancements in technology has helped them trace DNA, playing a large part in closing cases.

However, there are also challenges when it comes to reviewing some of the older case files.

"The detectives that worked the cases are now deceased, most of the witnesses are deceased. Even if we have a smoking gun case, and the person that collected it is no longer alive, we can't get it admitted into court," Sgt. Price says.

Investigators know the families of victims are counting on them to find answers to help bring them closure.

"I've met with parents, and I see their hurt and their torment, and you really want to be able to bring some resolution to them," says Sgt. Price.

Detectives still need your help to close hundreds of cases. If you know anything about an open case, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
