RALEIGH, N.C. — President Donald Trump solidified his tough stance on immigration by announcing his intention to end birthright citizenship.

  • Trump said on Monday he's considering using an executive order to revoke the right, a fundamental part of the Constitution's 14th Amendment
  • A political analyst says it will be nearly impossible for President Trump to change the Constitution with an executive order
  • President Trump says his lawyers in the White House are looking over his proposal

President Trump said on Monday he's considering using an executive order to revoke the right, which is a fundamental part of the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

However, political analyst and Meredith College professor David McLennan says it will be nearly impossible for President Trump to change the Constitution with an executive order.

"If the President does pursue it, there are going to be legal challenges immediately," said McLennan. "The Supreme Court, no matter how conservative it is, can see the 14th Amendment."

McLennan says President Trump's latest statement is likely a political move, since there is only a week until the midterm elections and President Trump has a pattern of making bold declarations of this caliber.

"Trump can go in one interview and talk about the Constitution with an executive order, and all of a sudden his voters aren't thinking about guns or anything like that," said McLennan. "They're thinking about immigration and continuing the fight. These statements really have more political importance than legal importance."
