CHARLOTTE, NC – One of the longest-running political traditions in Charlotte mixed pork with politics Thursday.

  • It gives political candidates a chance to talk to voters.
  • Volunteers cooked more than 14,000 pounds of meat.
  • Organizers say they average about 15,000 guests.

The 89th Mallard Creek Barbecue brings local and state political candidates together with voters each year.

Volunteers cooked 14,000 of pounds of meat for the feast. The event is always right before election day.

"I get to answer some serious questions and from time to time almost every single year I end up sitting down with somebody over something over barbecue and we get to spend as much times as we need,” Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Puckett says.

Organizers say they average about 15,000 guests. 

“It's important for us to make contact with the community, so they can meet with us one on one, understand what we're about,” district court judge  Alicia Brooks says.
