FLORENCE, S.C. -- Authorities say a 74-year-old Vietnam veteran now faces two counts of murder in the shooting of seven police officers, two of them fatally, in South Carolina earlier this month.

  • Richland Co. Sheriff Leon Lott said investigators upgraded one of Frederick Hopkins' attempted murder charges to murder on Tuesday
  • Florence County Sheriff's Investigator Farrah Turner died from her injuries in the shooting Monday
  • Hopkins is now charged with two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said investigators upgraded one of Frederick Hopkins' attempted murder charges to murder on Tuesday, one day after authorities say Florence County Sheriff's Investigator Farrah Turner died from her injuries in the shooting.

Turner was one of seven officers injured on October 3 when authorities say Hopkins ambushed officers coming to his Florence County home to question his adult son about a possible sexual assault on a minor. A City of Florence police officer died that day.

Turner's funeral is scheduled for Sunday.

Hopkins is now charged with two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.
