RALEIGH, N.C. -- A group gathered in downtown Raleigh on Monday afternoon, marching to protest the reported proposed changes to the definition of gender.

Protesters say there is a difference between sex and gender with sex being the biology you’re born with and gender, an internal awareness of how you feel and identify.

Marching from the LGBT Center down Fayetteville Street to the state Capitol, the group of protesters said they don’t want to see any protections for the estimated 1.4 million Americans who identify as transgender changed. With trans and rainbow flags in hand, the small group gathered announcing they won’t be erased.

While those who this could affect say it would take away their identity, others for the proposed definition change say sex and gender are fixed at birth.

“This is essentially kind of just erasing my identity. Erasing me as a person. It’s incredibly personal. It affects my friends, my community, you know the place that I work,” said Kori Case, LGBT Center of Raleigh.

"Look, I have great sympathy for people who have sexual confusion or gender confusion, but that doesn't mean we change the law, to reflect, to change the definition of terms that are fixed, that are true or not true," said Tami Fitzgerald, NC Values Coalition.

The Obama administration had recognized gender as decided by each person not on what they were born with, so if the proposed change were to happen, it would change that. It’s being reported that genetic testing would have to be done to clarify one’s sex if there were disputes.
